Jeff Bezos buys $165 million home after mansion-hunting with girlfriend
The world's richest person, Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos, has just bought the most expensive property in Los Angeles, United States. Bezos bought the Warner Estate for a whopping Rs. $165 million (Rs. 1,177 crore); just about 0.125% of his net worth of $132 billion. Reportedly, Bezos had been house-hunting with girlfriend, TV anchor Lauren Sanchez, in recent months. Here are more details.
Bezos bought Warner Estate from David Geffen
The Wall Street Journal first reported the multi-million dollar purchase. Reportedly, Bezos bought the Warner Estate in Beverly Hills from media mogul David Geffen. Bezos spent a record $165 million, reportedly making it the most expensive home ever sold in California. Recently, the New York Post had reported that Bezos had been mansion-hunting with Sanchez in the swanky Beverly Hills and Bel Air neighborhoods.
Here's what Bezos' new mansion looks like
According to Architectural Digest, the Warner Estate is a 13,600-square-foot Georgian-style mansion. The mansion reportedly boasts "expansive terraces and gardens, two guesthouses, nursery and three hothouses, tennis court, swimming pool, nine-hole golf course and motor court complete with its own service garage and gas pumps." It was designed by former Warner Bros. President Jack Warner in the 1930s and took a decade to construct.
Geffen purchased Warner Estate in 1990 for $47.5 million
After Jack Warner's death in 1978, his wife Ann stayed at the Estate until she too passed in 1990. Geffen then purchased the property along with the mansion's furnishings for an estimated $47.5 million, breaking national records. According to The Los Angeles Times, Geffen auctioned off original furnishings worth $11 million, which he deemed "too musty and museum-like."
Bezos was seen socializing with Geffen last summer
Last summer, Bezos and Sanchez were spotted partying with Geffen on the latter's mega-yacht. Goldman Sachs Group Inc.'s former chief, Lloyd Blankfein, was also present at the soirée. Recently, regulatory filings also showed that Bezos had encashed $4.1 billion of Amazon shares, perhaps for his recent splurge. Notably, the Amazon boss owns two more mansions in Beverly Hills, worth $24 million and $12.9 million.
