Airtel partners with SpaceX to introduce Starlink internet in India
What's the story
Airtel has announced a partnership with SpaceX to bring its satellite internet service, Starlink, to India.
The deal, however, is subject to getting the required approvals from Indian authorities for SpaceX to provide Starlink services in the country.
As part of the agreement, both companies are looking at potential areas of cooperation. Airtel may sell Starlink equipment in its stores and offer its services to businesses.
Strategy
Plans for Starlink usage
Airtel also plans to use Starlink's capabilities to expand internet access to rural schools, health centers, and remote areas across India. Additionally, Airtel and SpaceX are exploring how the latter can support Airtel's network and how SpaceX can use Airtel's infrastructure here.
Current collaboration
Airtel's existing satellite internet partnership
Currently, Airtel works with Eutelsat OneWeb for satellite internet. With Starlink in its portfolio, Airtel will be able to expand its coverage into regions with little to no internet.
This will give businesses as well as communities in remote areas more choices for high-speed internet connectivity, thereby improving their digital experience.
