Ola, Uber cab sharing to continue for another 15 days
The Transport Department has allowed Ola and Uber to continue their cab-sharing services for another 15 days as both aggregators submitted notes saying they were completely legal. The department's legal section is now verifying the firms' claims. On January 30, the department gave them three days to shut down their sharing service. Red alert in Bengaluru after shootout in broad daylight
Two people were injured when bike-borne miscreants fired at the car of Kadubale Srinivas, head of one of Bengaluru's Agricultural Produce Market Committees. Srinivas and his driver were rushed to hospital. The miscreants, with faces covered, followed the car and opened fire when they intercepted it at Kogilu Cross. They fled from the spot.
KV principal arrested for sexual harassment
Kumar Thakur, principal of Kendriya Vidyalaya Sadashiv Nagar, has been arrested for allegedly sexually abusing students and staff. He is now out on bail. Thakur allegedly sent obscene messages to girl students and female staff, and used the power of his position to keep them silent. Police took action based on a letter by Vasudeva Sharma of Bangalore Childline Nodal Centre.
Bengaluru houses may get unique digital ID
The state government has proposed a unique digital numbering system under the Smart City Mission. Based on geo-spatial location, addresses will be assigned an alphanumeric code called Standardized Digital Address Number. Each house will then be tagged on the GPS, making them traceable on Google Maps. A database will be publicly available. If approved, the pilot project will initially cover two lakh houses.
Bus with 40 passengers falls off bridge in Tavarekere
Ten people, including the driver, sustained injuries when a BMTC bus with 40 passengers fell off a bridge in Tavarekere. No casualty has been reported. The Nelamanga-Kengeri bus reportedly took a sharp turn to avoid collision with an incoming goods vehicle which was being driven rashly. It went through the parapet and fell 30 feet on to the Arkavathy riverbed. Traffic was temporarily blocked.
Ninth edition of Bengaluru International Film Festival kicks off
The first day of the Bengaluru International Film Festival was marked by delayed or cancelled shows, snaking lines and chaotic crowds at Vidhana Soudha. 75 films, including 'Guilty Men' and 'The Age of Shadows' were screened across 11 screens on the first day. The discussions focused largely on problems faced by Kannada cinema. Altogether 9,000 passes have been given out for the eight-day Festival.
