The Karnataka government on Thursday scrapped the controversial steel flyover project that was to be constructed in Bengaluru. According to sources, CM Siddaramaiah was troubled with allegations of corruptions levelled against him for the same. Barber in Bengaluru buys Mercedes Maybach for Rs.3.2 crore
Ramesh Babu, a barber from Bengaluru has become only the third person (after Vijay Mallya and a builder) to own a Mercedes Maybach costing Rs.3.2 crore. Growing up in a poverty-ridden home, Ramesh quit his studies and became a full-time barber after his father's death. Today, he continues to work at his salon and also owns 150 luxury cars which he rents out.
India remains R&D hub for Multi-National Companies
Research & Development centres being established by MNCs in India continue to be on the rise, with majority of them being from America. According to a report on Global In-house Centres (GIC), in 2016, India housed 1,208 R&D centres by 943 MNCs. GICs are established by companies with internal needs outside the home country. Bengaluru accounted for 35% of the same in 2016.
5,000 taxi drivers stage protest at Freedom Park
More than 5,000 cab drivers associated with taxi aggregators like Ola, Uber and TaxiForSure staged a major protest at Freedom Park on Wednesday. Janata Dal (Secular) state president HD Kumaraswamy has promised to provide the cab drivers with financial assistance. Tanveer Pasha, president of the Uber, TaxiForSure and Ola Drivers' Association also said that the drivers were willing to go to court.
Software engineer commits suicide after fiancé calls off wedding
32-year-old D Nagalakshmi hung herself to death after her wedding (scheduled for 29th May) was cancelled by her fiancé. After their engagement last year, the fiancé's father died in a road accident; believing her to be bad luck, the fiancé's family called off the wedding. Nagalakshmi worked as a team leader in a renowned software engineering firm.
67-year-old man convicted for raping minor girl in Mysuru
In 2013, grocery shop owner Mehboob Pasha raped a minor girl who was buying rice from his store. After a few months, it was discovered that the minor girl is pregnant. Mehboob Pasha claimed to have lost virility and said he couldn't rape anybody. A DNA test proved that he was the father. Mehboob Pasha will now serve 12 years in jail as punishment.
