Kambala 'anthem' goes viral amid Jallikattu protests
'Kambala-namma' by renowned singer Sathish Patla is being promoted as the theme-song of the protests in support of the buffalo racing sport, which was banned in Nov'16. It has received about 23,000 views. After TN decided to amend laws for Jallikattu, Karnataka too said it would move amendment on Kambala in the legislature session on February 6. Experts have ruled out external sources and desalination of Arabian Sea water as feasible options for Bengaluru. Proper water management is key. As opposed to the demand of 28 TMC of Cauvery water, Bengaluru was provided just 17.22 TMC. 750 MLD of groundwater is being extracted indiscriminately. However, CM Siddaramaiah has instructed drilling of more borewells.
Man attempts to rape patient in ambulance
An auto rickshaw driver has been arrested for attempting to rape a woman, who was being taken to a hospital in an ambulance. The accused was mistaken for an attendant. Her husband and the driver sitting in the front were separated by a metal partition, so they couldn't hear her screams. She registered a complaint after recovering. The accused was arrested from Padmanabhanagar.
Rs 4.12 crore seized from onion-potato bags in truck
Three men were arrested after Rs 4.12 crore in cash was recovered from vegetable bags in their truck. They were trying to move it to Kerala. They were found at a house in Anandnagar with the truck. The money, brought in from neighbouring states, would be used for gold trade in Kerala. The men were paid Rs 100 per one lakh as commission.
Forest department removes over 100 snares in major combing operation
In a major combing operation, the Karnataka Forest Department removed over 100 snares from across Nagarahole Tiger Reserve, suspected to have been laid down to capture animals. The two-day operation was launched after two tigers were strangulated to death by such traps. 31 snares were found in Anechowkur and Thithimathi, 23 in Kallahalla and Ponnampet and 67 between Nanachhi Gate and Kallahalla.
Bengaluru roads being dug up in violation of civic laws
BBMP has permitted digging up of six-month-old ECC Road in Whitefield for the second time in a few days, this time by an internet service provider. Graphite Road has also been dug up by a telecom company. This violates the body's own rules prohibiting road cutting within a year of asphalting. Borewell Road is still to be repaired five months after being dug up.
Women's safety, active policing top priorities for new police chief
Rupak Kumar Dutta, who took charge as DG & IGP on January 31, said instead of waiting for a woman's complaint, police can file suo motu FIRs in sensitive cases. He has invited suggestions on women's safety from concerned organizations. Dutta listed visible policing and beat patrolling as effective in tackling crime. Winning confidence of the people is key for the department, he said.
