Karnataka: Rs. 300cr rain relief package to save drowning Bengaluru
As heavy rains continue to batter Bengaluru, BBMP (Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike) is going to roll out a Rs. 300cr rain relief package under Nagarotthana Grant to save the city from floods, water-logging, and other rain-triggered problems. Bengaluru: Petrol pump to serve free food while customers refuel
In an impressive initiative to ensure at least some Bengalureans don't skip their meals to reach offices on time, Venkateshwara Service Station (near Indiranagar on Old Madras Road) would serve food to customers who stop to refuel. The petrol pump would serve free veg/non-veg breakfast, meals, and snacks at least for a month. The initiative is being launched in association with Indian Oil Corporation.
Unable to deal with layoffs, IT-workers fall for job scams
Job insecurity and layoffs are pushing IT professionals in Bengaluru to the edge of desperation, which is being cashed in on by dubious placement firms. Bengaluru Cyber Police Assistant Commissioner S Ravi said IT workers are increasingly falling for job scams. They received a huge number of cases where professionals paid money ranging Rs. 1-18L to fraudsters for jobs in top companies or abroad.
VTU 2017 Results: Revaluation starts today; new norms introduced
Karnataka's Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) declared results of Bachelor of Education and Bachelor of Technology courses for semester exams held in Jun-Jul'17. The revaluation process would begin on 4 September; one can apply for the same online before 9 September without penalty. VTU introduced new revaluation rules; if a student gets lesser marks than the original score in revaluation, the latter would be retained.
Hyderabad defeats Bengaluru in e-commerce race
According to a study by Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI), 1.9 million smartphone owners, or 22.4% of the total cellphone users, in Hyderabad have significantly contributed to its e-commerce business, helping it surpass Bengaluru in the sector. Among metros that recorded more business online, Hyderabad was ranked fourth after Mumbai, Delhi, and Kolkata, but ahead of Silicon Valley of India, Bengaluru.
Pubs, restaurants using dangerous liquid in drinks, ice-cream
Pubs and restaurants in Bengaluru are increasingly using liquid nitrogen to freeze or create vapor clouds or over drinks and ice-creams. Doctors say liquid nitrogen is frequently being used, but many don't know about its harms. If consumed before evaporation, liquid nitrogen may burn the tissues and digestive-tract. If taken in amounts exceeding a tea spoon, it expands inside the stomach, causing rupture.
Teenager drowns in Koramangala's Mestripalya Lake
An unidentified teenager drowned in the fenced-off Mestripalya Lake in Bengaluru's Koramangala 3rd block. Four friends went there for a dip; a passer-by raised the alarm after seeing the drowning boy. Koramangala police said he was pulled out and taken to St. John's Hospital where he was declared brought dead. His friends fled the place; police are trying to find the boy's parents.
