Karnataka: "Completely free" education for girls from 2018
Karnataka Government would provide "completely free education" for the girls in the state up to post-graduation from 2018, announced Higher Education Minister Basavaraja Rayareddi. At present, free education for girls up to undergraduate-level is provided in government schools/colleges; it would be extended to private educational institutions next year. Bengaluru: Dog's death results in two back-to-back suicides
Gamini, a 19-year-old girl from Bengaluru's Ashwath Nagar, committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling. She took the extreme step as she was depressed over the death of her pet dog Jimmy, a Pomeranian, in July. Having got overwhelmingly upset over Gamini's suicide, her friend followed suit only hours later by jumping in front of a train near Binny Mills, ending her life.
KSRTC's biodiesel tenders find no takers!
Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC), India's first state-run corporation to operate AC buses running entirely on biodiesel, is struggling to procure biodiesel. After the previous contractor, Hyderabad's Advait Bio Fuel, stopped supply from Dec'16, KSRTC floated two tenders, which received no response. The recently-floated third tender, inviting fuel suppliers to provide the alternative fuel has also found no takers as of now.
IIMB's new initiative to bolster Indo-Japan ties
The Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB) is all set to launch the "India-Japan Study Centre @ IIMB" initiative. It aims to promote business through academic collaborations and improve the understanding of Japan in India and vice-versa via research, teaching and policy outreach. IIMB's Director G Raghuram said the new Centre is part of efforts to further internationalize the management institute.
Online ads demanding advance payments scam people for money
Several Bengalureans have reportedly been scammed by con men posting ads of cars, bikes, and mobiles on online classifieds services like Quikr and OLX. The city's cybercrime department received 11 complaints where people were cheated of their money by advertisers claiming to sell expensive products at dirt cheap prices. Victims claim to have lost money ranging from Rs. 5,000-1.5L, totaling to Rs. 10L.
Karnataka: MLA Raghavendra's car rams into pedestrian, killing him
Former Karnataka CM BS Yeddyurappa's son and Shikharipura MLA BY Raghavendra's car rammed into a pedestrian named Suresh near Davangere, killing him on the spot. The victim was allegedly crossing the road when the car being driven by Raghavendra's driver knocked him down. The driver was booked under IPC Section-337; police are questioning witnesses, including Raghavendra, who was in the car at that time.
Mathai in news again: Requests extra security for sports bicycle
K Mathai, Karnataka Administrative Service's senior officer and Sakala Mission's administrative officer, wrote to Additional Chief Secretary (E-Governance) Rajeev Chawla, requesting security for his sports bicycle which he uses to commute to office. He has been riding the same since 24 August; he requested the higher officer to direct the security staff to guard his bicycle as it could get stolen if parked outside.
