Bengaluru: "It's my last day," texts techie, commits suicide
"It's my last day, take care of my son" - this was the last text sent by Rashmi Sathish to her US-based sister before she took her life, unable to bear the constant nudge of her husband and in-laws for dowry. Bengaluru based Rashmi, who used to work in a software company, was married since the past three years and had a 16-months-old son.
Rashmi was alone at her flat
The 28-year-old was alone at her Ramamurthynagar, East Bengaluru flat when the incident took place. Her son was with her mother Bhagyamma, who was intimated by her other daughter after the latter received the text around 12:30 PM. It took the mother 1-hour to reach Rashmi's house from Malleshwaram, whereas it takes 40 minutes normally. Upon reaching, she found the door locked from inside.
Husband, mother-in-law arrested
The frantic mother then called up her son-in-law Sathish, who was in his village in Kolar, and then rang up the cops. The cops arrived and broke open the door to find Rashmi hanging from a fan. Sathish, who also works in a private software company and his mother Gayathri were detained. Bhagyamma alleged that both of them consistently harassed Rashmi over dowry.
Gone too soon: Rashmi had quit job two weeks ago
"We've filed a case of dowry death under IPC Section 304B. We've detained the suspects and will arrest them soon," a police officer said. Rashmi had quit her job at Manyata Tech Park two weeks ago, possibly to take care of her son. Her husband too worked there. After conducting autopsy, her body was later handed over to her family members on Sunday.
