Karnataka govt to roll out free Wi-Fi for rural youth
Ahead of the Karnataka state Assembly election that is to be held this year, the state government has proposed to take technology to the gram panchayat level by providing the rural youth with free Wi-Fi and better employment opportunities. According to a report, the state cabinet has approved of Internet connection to almost 2,650 gram panchayats. Here's all about it.
The scheme is already 'up and running': IT department
According to officials from the information technology (IT) department, the scheme has already been started in at least 500 gram panchayats, where Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) is the service provider. As per the scheme, the IT department will provide every user with 1 GB free Wi-Fi every month within 1sqkm of the service provider.
How does the scheme function?
Under this scheme, the IT department will be providing Internet services in the rural areas with the help of the Bapuji Seva Kendra (BSK) or Seva Sindhu centres present in the area. These centres will, in turn, take help of local entrepreneurs who would take charge of providing the services to the people.
