Water scarcity hits Bengaluru
Water supply in many areas like Ramamurthy Nagar, C.V. Raman Nagar and more has been erratic since last few weeks. At Nayandahalli, 15 new borewells are being dug. Out of a capacity of 1,400 million litres a day, 1,352 million litres are being supplied currently. Spike in consumption could cause shortage of water for 15-20 days. Basaveshwara Circle flyover to cause felling of over 2,200 trees
The upcoming flyover from Basaveshwara Circle to Hebbal Flyover and the widening of Jayamahal Road will cause felling of 2,244 trees. Meanwhile, official estimates range from 812 to 1,668 trees. Government has assured replanting of 60,000 trees. However, the city's track record of compensatory tree plantation is not impressive. Matters are worsened as the proposed spots are very far from the project site.
Man who attacked woman in Bengaluru ATM nabbed in AP
Madhukar Reddy has been arrested by Chittoor Police for the attack on Jyothi Uday in an ATM cubicle in N.R. Square in November 2013. The suspect is wanted in several other cases of murder. He has been absconding since he escaped from Kadapa Central Jail. Reddy's involvement in Uday's assault was revealed after his February 3 arrest. She will be called for his identification.
Steep rise in number of pending POCSO cases in Bengaluru
Out of 280 reported, 163 POCSO cases are still under investigation in Bengaluru at the end of 2016. The previous year, 47 out of 276 cases remained pending, and 12 out of 302 in 2014. Legally, POCSO cases are to be done with within a year. The backlash comes after a school principal got bail within 24 hours of being arrested for allegedly assaulting his students and staff.
Tension at Biffes after national anthem incident
Things got heated at Biffes when some among the audience refused to stand up during the anthem anthem being played before the Serbian movie 'Train Driver's Diary'. The screening had already been delayed by an hour. The audience got agitated when a group of youngsters kept sitting. One of them was eventually escorted out by the organisers. Audience members were seen congratulating each other.
Civic body launches app for consumer grievances
The BBMP has launched an app called 'Sahaaya' wherein citizens can now file complaints. They can even add pictures. Users can register grievances according to category, location etc, just with their phone number, without registering. The BBMP's IT department developed the app in two months. A website called 'Sahaaya' has been functional since before.
Town near Bengaluru tense after police station torched
Residents of Laxmeshwar town, 400km from Bengaluru, set fire to a police station and damaged vehicles after a man reportedly died in police custody. Locals and kin of Shivappa Ganiger alias Guli alleged custodial torture, but police maintained he died while being taken to hospital after a cardiac arrest. Laxmeshwar sub-inspector Devanand and driver Ashok Pujar have been suspended. Prohibitory orders are in place.
Bengaluru gets new Volvo buses with swanky features
As part of a three-month trial, BMTC has begun running two AC buses in the city with charging points at every seat row, an emergency switch near the middle door, wheelchair facility at the middle door, and a panic button near the driver's seat. They are equipped with two cameras and an intelligent transport system. These buses were acquired under the JNNURM scheme.
