Bengaluru:Woman loses Rs. 16,000 while trying to save Rs. 317
A Bengaluru-based woman got the biggest shock after she made a payment of Rs. 317 mistakenly and while trying to retrieve it, lost Rs. 16,000 to hackers. The 40-year-old had erroneously paid her last month's electricity bill through a mobile app. Upon realizing it, she wrote to BESCOM. Soon she got an 'official' call, seeking her account-details for refund. Within minutes, she was defrauded.
She paid her current month's bill through PayUmoney
Vidita Choudhary, a resident of BTM 2nd Stage, said in her complaint that on July 20, she attempted to pay her current month's electricity bill. But by mistake, she ended up paying June's bill through 'PayUmoney'. She registered a consumer complaint with BESCOM to get it refunded on the same day. Four days later, on July 24 (Tuesday), she was contacted.
She got a mail and was called, asking for account-details
She received a mail around 11.23AM from 'consumercomplaintsboardfast@gmail.com,' saying she'd be contacted soon. "She received a call two minutes later from an unknown mobile number," said officials attached to Mico Layout police station, adding that the caller identified himself as a BESCOM official and sought details about her ICICI debit card. He then "transferred out Rs. 16,000 from her account," her police complaint read.
Vidita had contacted PayUmoney about it
Meanwhile, Vidita had also contacted PayUmoney about the mistaken transaction and the fraud. "The amount for the same has been remitted to the merchant," it said about the transaction. Regarding the fraud, they asked for the mobile number she had received a call from.
