Bengaluru: Friend allegedly forces woman to drink, then rapes her
A 21-year-old Bengaluru student has alleged she was raped by a friend, who forced her to drink and then took her to his HSR Layout flat after she fell semi-unconscious. Both of them had gone to attend the birthday party of a mutual friend. In 2015, NCRB revealed that more than 90% rapes are committed by someone the victim personally knows.
'When others insisted, I drank beer and became semi-conscious'
The woman, a native of Bhubaneswar, studies fashion designing in a north Bengaluru college, as does the accused Ravi Ranjan, though at a different college. According to her, both of them were invited by their common friend Himansu Bhat to his brother-in-law's birthday party at a restaurant in Kaikondrahalli on March 11. When others insisted, she drank some beer, but soon became semi-conscious.
'He made me drink more, agreed to help, raped me'
Bhat's brother-in-law, presumably drunk, tripped and fell, sustaining injuries. "Himansu and Puja (his sister) took him to a hospital. In a hurry, Himansu took the woman's mobile with him," police said. Meanwhile, Ravi made her drink more while agreeing to accompany her to collect her phone from Bhat. But "he instead took me to his flat and raped me," the woman alleged.
Accused on the run, police launch manhunt
The next morning, Ravi booked her a cab and sent her home. Police have registered a case of criminal intimidation and rape and said that the hunt for the accused is on.
