What's the story

After Karnataka government made the Kannada language compulsory in all schools starting from the academic session 2018-19, Bengaluru parents are now in a rush to learn the language and its script. From signing up for online tutorials to hiring private tutors, the parents are trying it all to learn the local language. They're even taking services of their domestic help. Here's more.

The compulsory subject

Parents learning Kannada to monitor wards' progress in school

Reportedly, the reason behind parents learning Kannada when it has been made compulsory for their kids is the necessity of guiding their wards' and to keep their progress in check. The state government in October last year made Kannada, a compulsory subject for all schools including central boards like CBSE, CISCE and other private ones under the Kannada Language Learning Act, 2015.

The rules

Compulsory implementation to be done in phased manner

The norm says that the implementation will be done in phases. Even though the Class I students will learn Kannada from this academic year, they will be writing Kannada language examination only after first three years, i.e. from Class IV. Besides, if any student from different state joins Class IV, then he or she will not have to write the exams till Class VI.
