Only two lakes in Bengaluru passed water quality test
The worsening condition of Bengaluru's natural waterbodies has been making a lot of news recently. It is being feared that after Cape Town, Bengaluru might be one of the cities heading towards Day Zero. Amidst this, a latest report on the quality of water of the city's tanks/lakes has revealed that only two waterbodies have water quality index at satisfactory levels.
Test conducted after samples were collected from 53 waterbodies
The two lakes that have qualified in the test are Agara Lake and Ulsoor Lake. The test was conducted by the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) after it collected samples from 53 waterbodies across the city, between April and December last year. The data revealed that the water from the lakes which failed the test is not even fit for consumption by animals.
Quality of water not ready for human consumption
The water of the lakes that are of satisfactory levels cannot be used for human consumption unless it is conventionally treated. The data also indicates that the condition of all the lakes might soon be like the Bellandur and Varthur lakes that are known for frequent frothing and fire. Somasundarapalya Lake, Shivapura tank, Karihobanahalli Lake, Puttenahalli Lake are amongst those with poorest water quality.
