Recent incessant rains in Bengaluru break 127-year-old record
The MET department said Bengaluru received 128.7mm rainfall on Monday, which is the highest rainfall received in a single day since 1890. This makes up 88% of the rain expected during the entire month. Karnataka CM presses to give priority to Kannada
At the 70th I-Day celebrations in Bengaluru, Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah pressed on giving priority to Kannada and disapproved of language imposition. "Imposition of other languages will be against the spirit of formation of states on linguistic basis. When we have Kannada as official language, it's unconstitutional to impose any other language." Siddaramaiah has recently written to Centre that BMRC was being told to redesign its signages.
Bellandur lake's froth worse than ever before
Monday's overnight showers added to frothing in Bellandur lake so much so the froth's wave was high enough to swamp a two-storey building. All efforts to clean up the lake, as ordered by NGT, have gone for a toss. According to experts, frothing of lake is due to discharge of sewage water containing household detergents. This calls for immediate setting up of sewage-treatment plants.
Participants of Rickshaw Challenge arrive in Mangaluru
The Mangaluru round of Mumbai Xpress-Rickshaw Challenge 2017 was flagged off with 30 international participants. The Challenge starts from Mumbai and ends in Chennai, wherein the participants take part in various mini-races. "Adventurers have come from abroad looking for an experience of a lifetime. To win, participants will have to rely on locals at every destination. Clearly, it is all about human power," said an official.
Breakfast, dinner at Rs. 5, 10 at Bengaluru's Indira Canteens
The Karnataka government's ambitious Indira Canteens, which will offer breakfast for Rs. 5 and dinner for Rs. 10, was inaugurated today. On opening day, lunch and dinner will be free for all. August 15 was the deadline to set up 198 canteens in all wards, but several controversies delayed the project. Only 101 canteens started services today.
