Actor-Cricketer Dhruv Sharma passes away in Bengaluru
Speech and hearing impaired Dhruv Sharma, who went on to become Sandalwood actor and professional cricket player, died from multiple-organ failure in Bengaluru today. The Indian deaf and dumb cricket team won the world cup under his captaincy. He also starred in many films. He was also one of the players of Sandalwood team in Celebrity Cricket League. 20 Bengaluru lakes to be denotified
Sarjapura residents are worried as Karnataka government intends to denotify 20 out of 26 lakes in their area. Some of these lakes have dried up or are in poor shape. Authorities have turned a blind eye to the garbage piling up on lake beds. What's worse is that sand-mafia as well as real-estate mafia have encroached these lake beds and turned them into dumpyard.
Karnataka HC refuses to release top businessman's passport
Karnataka High Court refuted request of releasing the passport of one of India's leading businessmen Nitin Shambu Kumar Kasliwal. Kasliwal's companies owe Rs. 6,500 crore to lenders like the IDBI Bank, which claim he might go underground if he is allowed to travel. IDBI declared him a willful defaulter. Kasliwal's passport was seized following an order passed by Debts Recovery Tribunal in December, 2016.
Suneel Kumar to replace Praveen Sood as new commissioner
Siddaramaiah government transferred Bengaluru City police commissioner Praveen Sood to the post of additional director general of police (communications, logistics and modernization). He will be replaced by 1989 batch IPS-officer T Suneel Kumar. Sood's transfer, after seven months of his appointment, has caused a commotion among police, political figures. Sources said Sood was transferred for taking action against pro-Kannada activists who defaced metro signages.
Bengaluru woman sexually assaulted by husband, harassed for dowry
A Chamarajpet resident filed a complaint with Basavanagudi women's police station who has claimed sexual assault by husband and harassment for dowry by in-laws. "It is a case under section 498-A (dowry harassment). They married about a year ago, but stayed together for only two-three months," a police official said. According to media reports, the husband used to force her to watch pornographic content.
Karnataka gets its first Beary-English-Kannada dictionary
In order to preserve a dying language, district in-charge, Ramanath Rai inaugurated the first ever Beary-English-Kannada dictionary in Mangaluru. The Karnataka Beary Sahitya Academy came up with 841-page dictionary that has 10,000 words. "Beary is spoken by Muslim communities. Beary community first settled in Dakshina Kannada over 1300 years ago. It would be wise to teach it as third language," said Professor Mohammad Hanif.
