Bengaluru: Over concretization led to floods, says IISc study
After heavy rains flooded most parts of Bengaluru, an Indian Institute of Science (IISc) study said "unchecked concretization" coupled with the acute loss of vegetation and wetland is the reason behind the frequent flooding. It says concrete surfaces cover 78% of the city's area, including catchment areas, hindering smooth flow of water resulting in floods and waterlogged roads. Tap in for more Bengaluru news!
Bengaluru: Dengue cases rise seven-fold
The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) said the number of dengue cases in Bengaluru is "spiraling threateningly." As many as 4,280 dengue cases in the city have been reported so far in 2017, which is seven times more compared to that of 2016.
Karnataka: Teacher aspirants disappointed with recruitment notification
Karnataka's education department finally notified the teacher recruitment order after a three-year delay. However, it announced the hiring of only 10,000 teachers while there is a shortage of 60,000 teachers. Several aspirants are upset as there was no call for primary teachers. Also, many are unhappy with the order's rules and regulations, in particular with the introduction of descriptive questions in qualifying exams.
Bengaluru: BMTC not to procure anymore new AC buses
Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC), which faced criticism for procuring expensive air-conditioned Volvo buses and ignoring ordinary ones, has decided not to purchase any new AC Volvo ones. It said its current fleet of AC buses could meet the rising demand; it also started operating 86 of its old AC buses after repairing them. About 80,000-1,00,000 passengers travel on BMTC's AC buses daily.
Karnataka: Dacoity in Bengaluru-bound KSRTC bus
Four dacoits attacked passengers on a Kerala State Road Transport Corporation bus on its way to Bengaluru near Karnataka's Channapatna in the early hours today. At knife-point, they threatened passengers to handover their money and jewelry. Confirming the incident, Kerala DGP Loknath Behra said he informed RK Dutta, his Karnataka counterpart, about the same. He said Dutta assured the criminals would be traced soon.
Air Costa refunds: Passengers turn to social media, complaint forums
It has been over six months since Vijayawada-based regional airline, Air Costa, suspended its operations in Feb'17. However, several passengers are still waiting for the former carrier to refund their tickets booked for flights in advance that were canceled as it shut down. Several passengers from Bengaluru or those traveling to/from the city are also yet to receive the refund.
