Bengaluru should expect another sweltering summer
According to a bulletin circulated by the MET Department, the maximum temperature on Sunday was 35 degrees Celsius in Bengaluru. MB Gowda, a professor of agro meteorology said the temperature could rise to 36-37 degrees Celsius over the next 2-4 days, which will make it rain, and this cycle will continue till May. Out of every 20 vehicles, Bengaluru has 1 polluting vehicle
Four months ago, the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) deployed 8 mobile emission-testing vans across Bengaluru. Of the 9,284 vehicles checked for vehicle emission norms, 1,799 (approximately 20%) vehicles inspected flouted them. With regards to diesel vehicles, more than 30% of the 2,647 diesel vehicles failed the test. Transport Department officials stated that the violators had no emission certificates at all.
Traffic Police asks NHAI to step up construction of underpass
The traffic police of Bengaluru have asked the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to accelerate work at the underpass construction at the Kempegowda International Airport. The project was initiated by the NHAI six months ago and aims at easier pedestrian crossing. The pedestrian underpass is being constructed at the Hunasamaranahalli Junction and the traffic caused by this construction is deteriorating every day.
Residents want KCDC to shut down
Residents of Somasundarapalya and its surrounding areas want the Karnataka Compost Development Corporation (KCDC) plant to shut down due to the smell and leachate from it. On Sunday, they stopped garbage trucks from entering KCDC's compound; after talks with a BBMP official failed, they decided to sit outside the plant's gate all night. According to protesters, they are tolerating the stench since 2013.
Will Siddaramaiah save Kappatugudda?
Karnataka's wildlife board has passed over to CM Siddaramaiah the power to decide unilaterally whether Kappatagudda should be protected from mining activities as it is an ecologically sensitive region. Recently, the Karnataka HC too decided to be left out of the debate of protecting Kappatagudda. The National Committee for Protection of Natural Resources has urged the State government to commit to the environment.
Bengaluru's vertical gardens will help curb pollution
A vertical garden was installed on one of the many tall pillars supporting Hosur Road flyover in Bengaluru by SayTrees, an NGO working for the protection of the environment. The garden houses approximately 3,500 saplings from 12 different plant species. SayTrees will look after the vertical garden and plans to recreate the same on similar locations across the city and eventually, the country.
