Bengaluru horror: 14-year-old gang-raped by minors
Three youths, including two minors, gang-raped a 14-year-old girl in Bengaluru's north division. The victim's neighbour, the main accused would often take her out to eat 'chaat'. One day, he took her out to watch a movie, and then to a broken-down building where he raped her. He then called 2 of his friends, who also raped her. Tap in for more from Bengaluru!
Students invent drone that can extinguish flames
A group of students from Bengaluru's Sri Sairam College of Engineering invented a drone that can put out fires. The drone carries a 'fireball', which when dropped on the accident spot, explodes in order to douse the flames. This ball comprises of sodium bi-carbonate, which upon explosion converts into carbon di-oxide. The drone also has a camera and can travel up to 40 kmph.
Bengaluru traders want special GST slab of 1.25% on jewellery
With the Goods and Services Tax (GST) to be implemented soon, Bengaluru's jewellers are seeking a special slab of 1.25% of GST for jewellery. Currently, 1% Value Added Tax (VAT), 1% Central Excise Duty and 10% customs duty (in case of imports) are levied on gold jewellery. The jewellers are all set to meet Union Revenue Secretary, Hasmukh Adhia on 29th and 30th May.
Drunk driving cases on a rise in Bengaluru
Bengaluru's city traffic police have witnessed an increasing trend in the number of drunk driving cases since January this year. Currently, the number of drunk driving cases registered this year is over 20,000. In the month of April alone, 6,764 people were caught driving/riding under the influence of alcohol. Officials claim that in most registered cases, the offenders are from outside of Bengaluru.
CM Siddaramaiah directs banks to renew loans of drought-hit farmers
Chief Minister of Karnataka Siddaramaiah, at a State-Level Bankers' Committee meet on Thursday urged state-run and co-operative banks to renew the loans of farmers suffering from the impact of sever drought across Karnataka. The CM added that in the 2016 kharif season, 139 local bodies (sub-districts) were declared drought-hit, whereas in the rabi season, 160 local bodies were declared drought-hit across Karnataka.
Pourakarmikas protest against contract system
On Thursday, pourakarmikas of Bengaluru assembled at Freedom Park with their brooms and demanded the abolition of the contract system. They also threatened to go on a strike from 12th June, if their demands remain unmet. According to pourakarmikas, they are subjected to harassment under the contract system and their salaries too are never paid in full.
