Bengaluru's Bellandur lake catches fire once again
The infamous Bellandur lake in South East Bengaluru once again caught fire on Friday morning around 10 am, as nearby residents spotted smoke emitting from the severely-polluted lake. Even though a fire tender was sent to the spot around noon, it couldn't reach the exact spot of the fire and tried to douse the fire with plants, said a report.
Lake had caught fire multiple times in the past
This is not the first time the lake caught fire. Earlier in May 2015 and August 2016, the lake was in blaze due to the formation of flammable methane gas. However, the issue came to attention after last year's fire in February. After last year's fire, the National Green Tribunal came down heavily on Bengaluru's civic agencies for failing to clean up the lake.
Toxic materials accumulated in lake may have caused fire
According to reports, the lake receives over 480 million litres of raw sewage daily, as a result of which the accumulation of toxic materials might have caused the multiple fire incidents. "The Karnataka State Pollution Control Board's regional authorities had then inspected the site and found that the methane build-up on the surface of the lake had led to the fire," said a report.
