IndiGo tire burst in Hyderabad Airport affects Bengaluru flights
Bengaluru Airport flight operations were severely hit after an IndiGo airplane suffered a tire-burst at Hyderabad Airport yesterday night. The mishap happened when the flight, en-route to Hyderabad from Tirupati, was landing around 10.30 PM. Almost 20 flights to and from Bengaluru had to be shifted. Moreover, many Hyderabad-bound flights were diverted to Bengaluru, and the additional burden hit airport operations.
What exactly happened to the IndiGo aircraft?
The IndiGo flight having 77 people on board, including actor and YSR Congress lawmaker Roja, left Tirupati at 8.55 PM and touched down at Hyderabad around 10.30 PM. While landing, one of the tires burst, causing panic among passengers. All were safely evacuated.
Aircraft stranded on Hyderabad runway post tire burst
The aircraft 6E 7117 was stranded on the runway post the incident, so the airport remained closed from 10.30pm (Wednesday) to 2:22am (Thursday). Several flights to Hyderabad were diverted to Bengaluru while four Hyderabad-bound flights returned to the Karnataka capital. BIAL officials said flights from Bengaluru were diverted to Chennai, Mumbai and Coimbatore. All these combined cascaded and caused massive delays of several flights.
Runway debris common cause of tire burst in aircraft
One common reason for tire-bursts in aircraft is runway debris. The 2000 accident of Air France Flight 4590 happened because its tires burst due to runway debris that punctured the fuel-tank. Subsequently, the aircraft caught fire and crashed into a hotel, killing all on board.
