Defying 80% disability, this Bengaluru boy scored 94% in Class-X
A 16-year-old Bengaluru boy scored 94% marks in SSLC examinations. Sounds nothing unusual, does it? But if this particular boy is suffering from muscular dystrophy, a rare genetic disorder that gradually weakens the muscles since childhood, and still scoring such high marks, that'd indeed be unusual. Meet Rahul KS, who defied 80% disability and frail health to nail the Class-X exams this year.
Know about muscular dystrophy, Rahul's ailment
Muscular dystrophy affects a person since childhood, when abnormal genes or mutations lead to muscle deterioration. Progressively, damaged muscles become weaker, rendering a person wheelchair-bound. The afflicted person may also have trouble breathing or swallowing. Treatment can help, but this condition cannot be cured.
The wheelchair-bound Rahul even struggles to write properly
Rahul weighs just 20kgs and has been wheelchair-bound since 5-years. His father Kanakaraj R shares that when Rahul, eldest of three siblings, turned seven, he'd lose balance while walking. Currently, he can write with his right hand, but stumbles when it comes to diagrams. Because of his frail health, he has difficulty doing practicals too.
Despite struggles, Rahul scored impressively in all subjects
Despite his troubles, Rahul scored an impressive 98 in science. He scored 116/125 in English, 95/100 in Kannada, and 92, 93 and 98 in Hindi, Mathematics and Social Sciences respectively Rekha Venugopal, Kairalee Nikethan English HS Headmistress, said she expects the state government to help. Kanakaraj expects support from Samaritans, so that Rahul is able to achieve his dream of becoming a computer engineer.
