Karnataka: Bajrang Dal men assault 3 Dalits for eating beef
10 activists from the Bajrang Dal reportedly entered a house in Udupi's Kundapur taluk and assaulted 3 Dalit men who they thought were consuming beef. The activists were led by Gururaj Acharya, Sunil Poojary and Chandrakanth Poojary; it is also alleged that the activists verbally abused the Dalits. Karnataka most corrupt state in India: Study
A private think tank on Thursday released the findings of its study, which revealed that Karnataka is the most corrupt state in the country. In the study, conducted by Centre for Media Studies, 77% of the people said they face corruption in Karnataka while availing public services. The study was conducted in 20 states over a period of one year, covering over 3,000 households.
Bengaluru contractor pollutes Bellandur Lake, fined for Rs. 5 lakh
The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagar Palike (BBMP) has slapped a fine of Rs. 5 lakh on a garbage contractor for dumping waste in Bellandur Lake. According to reports, BBMP has not only fined the contractor, but also suspended the concerned health officer. The commissioner said the penalty was imposed in alignment with the NGT's order issued on 9th April.
'Mini' Vidhan Soudha will be built on government land
Karnataka HC upheld the state government's decision of building 'Mini' Vidhan Soudhas on government land rather than land donated by private persons in the Kalaburagi district. Hearing a petition challenging the same, the court said that it cannot interfere in executive decisions that have been made by the state. 'Mini' Vidhan Soudhas are replicas of Vidhan Soudhas built in Karnataka's district and taluk headquarters.
Karnataka government contemplates subsidizing pilgrimages
The Tourism Department of Karnataka is planning to subsidize pilgrimages to various shrines through the Puneetha Yatra. According to sources, the government is planning a 25-50% subsidy for the tour to be organized by the Karnataka State Tourism Development Corporation (KSTDC). This would generate revenue for both the corporation as well as for 2018's assembly polls (political capital).
Government urging collaboration between farmers and Bigbasket
In order for farmers to have a wider scope in e-commerce, the government of Karnataka is promoting collaboration between Bigbasket, an online grocery store, and federations of organic farmers for procuring millets and spices. Two Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) are going to be signed today (Friday) between Bigbasket and farmers' federations at Organic Millets-2017, the 3-day national fair to be held at Palace Grounds.
