Bengaluru: Did web check-in? Just drop your bag at kiosk!
After Mumbai airport introduced the self-bag drop facility in December 2016, Bengaluru's Kempegowda International Airport will be next. Officials of Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) said the facility will start in July. But here's the disclaimer: you can use this only if you have opted for web check-in. If you haven't, you will have to stand in the queue.
Kiosks to scan, weight and clear luggages
"We are planning to install 16 self-bag drop counters equipped with scanners and sensors. They will automatically check flight data, baggage weight and size before the bag is deposited into the handling system," said a senior BIAL official. One will be able to weigh the luggage and attach tags at the kiosk, which will then be checked by an attendant before loading it.
How will this help passengers and the airport?
The new step will result in a better flying experience as terminal capacity will increase, operating costs for airlines will reduce and boarding queues will get shorter. Even the manpower needed at individual baggage counters will be cut down.
