Bengaluru to get 10,000 CCTV cameras for women's safety

Did you know Bengaluru has seen a 186% rise in rape cases in a single year? Taking this appalling data into consideration, authorities will install 10,000 CCTV cameras in more than 4,500 junctions and main roads to make the city safer for women. Called 'Smart Eyes', these cameras will be powered by AI (Artificial Intelligence).

The proposal - 'Suraksha Mitra' - entails installing the cameras at junctions and roads, covering a distance of 2,714km. The AI system will be 'trained' to observe human behavior, as the cameras will be installed to predict odd human movements. BBMP said that they will also report an anomaly if there is an influx of people crossing an area every day at any hour.

Safety islands, women cop outposts: other measures to be taken
Apart from the cameras, there will be surveillance at public places, NGO volunteers at police stations, women police outposts and safety islands at vulnerable areas. 'Rani Chennamma' women teams will also be deployed to sensitize people. "These proposals have been sanctioned for three years on a cost-sharing basis of 60:40 ratio with states," said a senior official of the WCD Ministry.
