Delhi: 95% of new vehicles will be EVs by 2027
What's the story
The Delhi government has unveiled its EV Policy 2.0, targeting an ambitious 95% of new vehicle registrations to be electric by 2027.
Reviewed by Transport Minister Pankaj Kumar Singh, the policy is intended to accelerate the city's shift toward electric mobility and cement its position as India's leader in electric vehicle (EV) adoption.
The initiative also promises incentives for buying electric two-wheelers and electric trucks.
Transition plan
Phase-out of CNG vehicles and introduction of e-buses
The Delhi EV Policy 2.0 details a phased approach to replace all CNG auto-rickshaws, taxis, as well as light commercial vehicles with electric ones.
The government has also committed to a full transition to electric buses, making the public transport system sustainable.
This is part of the larger plan to expedite the city's transition to electric mobility.
Incentives
Incentives for EV purchases and infrastructure development
The proposed policy includes incentives for buying electric two/three-wheelers, e-light commercial vehicles (e-LCVs), and e-trucks.
It also offers scrapping and retrofitting incentives to promote a shift from internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles to EVs.
To ensure this transition, the government plans to install more public charging points and mandate charging stations in new buildings as well as public spaces.
Infrastructure
Fast-charging corridors and state EV fund
The policy proposes the development of fast-charging corridors along the major roads, including the Ring Road and Outer Ring Road. A dedicated State EV Fund will be established to finance such incentives, sourced via green levies, pollution cess, and aggregator license fees.
Employment
Skill development and job creation
The Delhi EV Policy 2.0 emphasizes skill development as well as job creation in the electric mobility sector.
The government wants to generate employment in EV sales, servicing, financing, and battery management.
As part of this move, the Delhi Skill & Entrepreneurship University will collaborate on training programs for EV mechanics and drivers.
Monitoring
DCMC to oversee policy execution
To ensure effective implementation of the policy, a Delhi Clean Mobility Centre (DCMC) will be set up.
This center will monitor progress and facilitate the city's transition toward an all-electric transport system.
The proposed EV policy is also tipped to replace the current framework and provide a long-term strategy for further accelerating electric mobility adoption in the capital.
