What's the story

Swedish luxury carmaker Volvo has launched the petrol-powered XC40 T4 R-Design SUV in India at Rs. 39.90 lakh. The new model offers several luxurious as well as hi-tech features and packs a BS6-compliant petrol motor. Apart from the engine upgrade, the R-Design variant retains all the features of the diesel-based XC40. Here's our roundup.

First, a look at the car

The XC40 T4 R-Design variant looks similar to the other XC40 models. It features a sporty design with dual-tone color scheme, a blacked-out front grille with company's emblem, and a trapezoidal air-intake. The car comes with blacked-out wheel arches as well as side claddings, dual exhausts, and "VOLVO" lettering on the tailgate. Besides that, it houses indicator-mounted ORVMs and an all-LED setup for lighting.

Inside the cabin

Inside, the XC40 T4 R-Design offers a spacious five-seater cabin with a panoramic sunroof, two-zone climate control, and a 14-speaker Harmon Kardon audio system. The car also houses a massive 12.3-inch instrument cluster and a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment panel with connectivity features. For safety, it offers features like ABS with EBD, driver and passenger airbags, as well as rear and front parking assist sensors.

Power and performance

The XC40 T4 R-Design packs a BS6-compliant, 2.0-liter, four-cylinder petrol engine, which comes mated to an 8-speed automatic gearbox and sends power to the front wheels via a front-wheel-drive (FWD) system. The unit churns out 190bhp of maximum power and 300Nm of peak torque.

Finally, what about pricing and availability?

As for the pocket pinch, the petrol-powered XC40 T4 R-Design is priced at Rs. 39.90 lakh, which is the same as the diesel-based Momentum variant. Meanwhile, there is also a top-spec diesel-powered Inscription model which costs Rs. 43.9 lakh. At this price point, the car goes up against BMW X1, Mercedes-Benz GLA, Mini Countryman, and Audi Q3.
