Meet EX30 Cross Country, Volvo's first electric off-roader
What's the story
Swedish automaker Volvo has unveiled the EX30 Cross Country, a major milestone in its product lineup.
The new model is the first electric vehicle from Volvo to receive a Cross Country badge.
The company plans to introduce several new models in the next two years, with the EX30 Cross Country leading this wave of innovation.
Design upgrades
EX30 Cross Country: A vehicle for outdoor exploration
The EX30 Cross Country is an upgrade of the current EX30 model, but this one is made for outdoor exploration.
However, Volvo makes it clear that this new model isn't for extreme off-roading. Rather, it wants to help owners "access nature on nature's terms" instead of dominating it.
To do that, engineers have increased the ground clearance by 19mm to 190mm and fitted larger tires measuring 235/50R19 (optional all-terrain tires also available).
Vehicle enhancements
Chassis and aesthetic modifications
The chassis of the EX30 Cross Country has been fine-tuned to handle varied terrains more effectively.
Aesthetic changes include replacing the traditional grille with a matte black unit engraved to resemble a topography map, featuring coordinates of a Swedish mountain range.
The bumpers have been modified, wheel arch extensions added, and Cross Country branding is now prominently displayed on body panels like the rear bumper and C-pillar.
Vehicle specifications
Powertrain and performance details
The EX30 Cross Country is driven by a twin-motor setup, providing 422hp and 542Nm of torque. It can go from 0-100km/h in an estimated 3.7 seconds.
The car's 65kWh net battery provides a range of some 425km on the WLTP cycle, with a more realistic EPA figure of some 368km.
The car's curb weight is roughly 100kg more than the standard EX30 model owing to these upgrades.
Market focus
Volvo targets adventure seekers with EX30 Cross Country
Targeting adventure lovers, Volvo is promoting the EX30 Cross Country with accessories such as kayak carriers and roof tents.
The maximum roof load is 75kg, and payload usually has a negligible effect on EV range, the company says.
If you're looking to tow stuff, Volvo claims the EX30 Cross Country can tow up to 1588kg.
Orders for this new model will open in mid-February in select markets.
Upcoming releases
Volvo's future plans include 5 new models
Along with the EX30 Cross Country, Volvo intends to introduce five new models this year. Some will be completely new designs, while others will receive updates as part of a mid-cycle refresh.
CEO Jim Rowan has detailed a future roadmap with a 'balanced portfolio' of EVs, PHEVs, and mild hybrids across sizes.
Some models are being developed for markets like China, others for global appeal.
