Volkswagen has unveiled the sportier R variant of its popular SUV, the Touareg. The new car comes with a plug-in hybrid powertrain and promises a range of up to 48km when driven in electric-only mode. It promises a top speed of 250kmph and can do a 0-100kmph sprint in 5 seconds. A look at the Volkswagen Touareg R
The Volkswagen Touareg R comes with an appealing look featuring a wide blacked-out grille, trapezoidal air inlets, and a sporty rear profile with roof spoiler, window wiper, and skid plates. The car has also received a blacked-out treatment on the roof rails, B-pillars, ORVMs, and alloy wheels. Moreover, it houses projector LED headlights with mounted DRLs and wraparound LED taillights.
Inside the cabin
Inside, the Volkswagen Touareg R offers a luxurious cabin with power-adjustable seats, a panoramic sunroof, and a three-spoke multifunctional steering wheel. The car houses a fully-digital instrument console and a centrally aligned touchscreen infotainment system with support for connectivity features. For safety, it gets driver and passenger airbags, ABS with EBD, ISOFIX child seat mounts, and several driver-assist features.
Power and performance
Under the hood, the Volkswagen Touareg R is powered by a 2.9-liter V6 petrol engine, paired with an electric motor that is backed by a 14.1kWh battery. The combined unit is capable of producing 462hp of maximum power and a 700Nm of peak torque. To manage transmission duties, the car houses an 8-speed Tiptronic automatic gearbox.
Will it arrive in India?
There is no word on when the Volkswagen will launch the performance-oriented Touareg R in India. However, reports suggest that the company will bring the standard Touareg SUV to our shores sometime soon. As for the pocket-pinch, it would be priced around Rs. 65-70 lakh.
