Indian students build one-off Volkswagen Taigun pickup truck
Skoda Auto Volkswagen India Private Limited (SAVWIPL) has unveiled a unique Taigun pickup truck, created as part of a student project. The initiative is the second of its kind, following last year's successful conversion of a Skoda Rapid into a convertible. This year, students have reimagined the Taigun SUV into an innovative pickup version using components from both the original model and the Virtus sedan.
A product of Skoda Volkswagen India's Skill India initiative
The Taigun pickup truck is a product of the Skill India initiative by Skoda Volkswagen India. The project spanned nine months and involved various stages including concept finalization, idea generation, market analysis, research and development, procurement, packaging, and final vehicle testing. Some parts used in this unique model were created using 3D printing technology.
Unique features of the Taigun pickup truck
The project model is equipped with unique features such as underbody protection, studded tires, ambient lighting, and special roof-mounted lights. These additions enhance its rugged pickup truck appearance. The vehicle's height has also been increased to give it a more commanding presence on the road.
Volkswagen's history with pickup truck concepts
While the Taigun pickup remains a one-off concept, Volkswagen has previously hinted at a Taigun-based pickup truck. In 2018, the company showcased the Volkswagen Tarok concept at the Sao Paulo auto show. Monocoque platform-based pickups like these are popular in South American and South African markets. The Tarok was designed to replace the previous-generation Polo-based Volkswagen Saveiro that was discontinued in 2023.
Skoda Auto Volkswagen India's vocational program
The SAVWIPL Academy's Dual Vocational Training in mechatronics is a flagship program launched in 2011. This full-time 3.5-year course, modeled after Germany's vocational system, aims to prepare young talents for the automobile industry. The program encourages technological creativity and problem-solving skills for developing innovative technologies.
