These full-size SUVs will debut in India in coming months
The full-size SUV category in India is poised for growth with several new launches on the horizon. The increasing popularity of SUVs, including compact, mid-size, and full-size 7-seater models, is tipped to continue in the coming years. Among the notable upcoming releases are the Toyota Fortuner Hybrid, Volkswagen Tayron, Jeep Meridian (facelift), and the new-generation SKODA Kodiaq.
Toyota Fortuner Hybrid
The Toyota Fortuner Hybrid, which broke cover last month in South Africa, is tipped to launch in India next year. This mild-hybrid variant of the Fortuner is powered by a 2.8-liter 1GD-FTV diesel engine, linked with a 48V mild-hybrid system. According to Toyota, this makes the Fortuner MHEV, 5% more fuel-efficient than its regular diesel counterpart. The power output stands at 201hp and 500Nm of peak torque.
Volkswagen Tayron
The Volkswagen Tayron, revealed at the Beijing Motor Show 2024 last month, is likely to launch in India sometime in 2025. This three-row SUV is built on Volkswagen's new MQB EVO architecture, which is shared with many other VW Group models internationally. The Tayron has a 2.0-liter turbo-petrol engine and a 7-speed DSG gearbox, with an optional all-wheel-drive system. In India, Volkswagen will likely offer the familiar 2.0-liter turbo-petrol unit.
Jeep Meridian (facelift)
The Jeep Meridian is due for a midlife upgrade, and is expected to debut in India by the end of this year. The facelifted car was seen testing in India, showing minor changes to the bumpers, front grille, headlamps, and taillights. A new set of alloy rims and ADAS technology will also be included in this model. Mechanically, the Meridian will continue to be powered by its familiar 2.0-liter turbo-diesel engine.
New-gen SKODA Kodiaq
The next-generation SKODA Kodiaq, which made its international debut last October, is likely to debut in India either by late 2024 or in 2025. This car, based on the new MQB-EVO platform, has grown by 61mm in length. The second-generation Kodiaq's launch in India will be via the CBU route, and pricing will start around ₹40 lakh (ex-showroom). It will feature a 2.0-liter turbo-petrol engine.
