Trump buys Tesla but he isn't allowed to drive—Here's why
What's the story
US President Donald Trump has got himself a new Tesla car, a red Model S, for roughly $80,000.
While he seemed pretty excited about the electric vehicle, he also revealed that he wouldn't be driving it himself. Rather, he plans to keep it at the White House for his staff's use.
The decision was announced during an interaction with Elon Musk, CEO and co-founder of Tesla, who also leads the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
Security concerns
Trump isn't allowed to drive due to strict security protocols
A sitting US President is not allowed to drive a car on public roads due to strict security protocols enforced by the Secret Service.
This policy is in place to minimize risks and ensure the President's safety. Presidents are typically driven by trained Secret Service agents in armored vehicles, like "The Beast," a highly secure presidential limousine.
However, they can drive on private property, such as their own estates or controlled environments.
Praise
Trump expresses admiration for Tesla's performance
During the car purchase, President Trump also expressed his admiration for Tesla's performance.
"The one I like is that one," he said, referring to the red Model S he chose.
"I'm gonna buy one, now here's the bad news. I'm not allowed to drive," President Trump said. "I haven't driven a car in a long time. And I love to drive cars.
"I'm not allowed to use it," he re-iterated. "Can you believe it?"
Support
Trump defends Tesla amid boycott and stock drop
The announcement of Trump's Tesla purchase came after the company's shares plummeted by 15%.
In response to the decline, he took to Truth Social to express his support for Musk and his company.
He accused "Radical Left Lunatics" of attempting an illegal and collusive boycott against Tesla.
Trump declared his intention to buy a new Tesla as a show of confidence and support for Musk, whom he praised as a "truly great American."
Response
Musk thanked Trump for his support
In response to Trump's announcement, Elon Musk thanked the president for his support. This came amid nationwide protests against Tesla over Musk's involvement in the Trump administration.
Protests have erupted across several states, with demonstrators expressing their discontent over DOGE's significant cuts to federal jobs and budgets.
Despite these challenges, Musk continues to receive backing from prominent figures like President Trump.
