Toyota teases new electric SUV: Will it rival BYD Sealion?
What's the story
Toyota is gearing up to unveil its latest electric vehicle (EV) on March 11.
The upcoming model is expected to be a production version of the coupe-SUV, inspired by the 2022 bZ Compact SUV concept.
It will be Toyota's third all-electric model after the bZ4X and the recently launched Urban Cruiser EV in international markets.
Expansion plan
New Toyota EV to join 6-model global lineup
Toyota has teased the new electric SUV with an image and video, showcasing design elements similar to the concept model.
The company's expansion plans also include bringing a total of six new EVs by 2026 in global markets.
The upcoming EV is similar in size to the bZ Compact SUV concept, which is aimed to take on models like Volvo C40 Recharge and BYD Sealion 7.
Tech specs
New Toyota EV to feature AWD technology
The teaser video hints the new EV will come with all-wheel-drive (AWD) tech. Just like the smaller Urban Cruiser, it will offer different battery sizes and motors.
The AWD variant will get motors on both axles, producing 184hp and 300Nm torque, with a 61kWh battery for a range of about 400km.
Entry-level variants could get a smaller 49kWh battery with a front motor producing 144hp.
Charging capabilities
New Toyota EV expected to support rapid charging
Both versions of the new Toyota EV are likely to support rapid charging at up to 150kW.
Though the interior details remain under wraps, the new EV is expected to have a setup similar to that of the Toyota C-HR.
This could include a 12.3-inch touchscreen, raised center console, and digital instrument cluster with top variants possibly offering a panoramic sunroof and JBL sound system.
