Toyota Hilux Electric to go official next year: Expected features
Toyota has officially announced plans to release the electric Hilux Revo BEV in 2025, with initial availability exclusive to Thailand. The decision to target the Thai market is a strategic one, considering the country's high demand for pickup trucks. In fact, over half of all cars retailed in Thailand are pickup trucks, presenting a significant opportunity for Toyota's electric Hilux.
Toyota's measured approach toward electric vehicles
Toyota's shift toward electric vehicles (EVs) is a calculated move, as the company has traditionally concentrated on hybrid cars rather than fully electric models. Despite the increasing trend toward zero-emission vehicles, Toyota anticipates that the market share of EVs will not surpass 30%. However, this doesn't imply that Toyota is entirely disregarding the EV sector.
Electric Hilux expected to offer 200km range
The forthcoming electric Hilux is projected to have a range of approximately 200km. While this may appear low in comparison to other EVs, it's a common issue with electric pickups due to their load carrying capacity, and the practical challenges associated with larger battery packs. There's no official confirmation yet, but it's speculated that the electric Hilux will be based on the new-generation ICE Hilux model.
Toyota's future plans for electric pickup models
In addition to the electric Hilux, Toyota has showcased other upcoming pickup models. At the 2023 Japan Mobility Show, the company unveiled an EPU concept with unibody construction similar to the Fiat Toro, and a small IMV-0 concept presented as a modular electric pickup truck. The IMV-0 platform is already being used in several countries for the combustion engine model, known as the Hilux Champ.
Potential launch of Fortuner Electric
Based on the same architecture as the Hilux, Toyota is tipped to launch the Fortuner Electric in the near future. However, the company has yet to confirm export opportunities for this electric model.
