    What's the story

South Korean automaker Hyundai is set to launch its second electric car, the Hyundai IONIQ 5 in India soon. The brand will open the order books for the EV from December 20.

The hatchback, with its futuristic interiors and head-turning design, is expected to debut on our shores at the 2023 Auto Expo. It will be locally assembled at the company's Chennai facility.

    Context

    Why does this story matter?

As demand for BEVs (Battery Electric Vehicles) is growing in India, all carmakers are expanding their line-up with greener alternatives.

Hyundai introduced the IONIQ 5 globally on February 2021. It is based on the brand's all-new Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) architecture.

The car will arrive via the CKD (completely knocked down) route on our shores, allowing it to be priced competitively.

    Exteriors

The EV flaunts designer wheels and a raked windscreen

The Hyundai IONIQ 5 features a clean design language with lots of flat surfaces. It flaunts a raked windshield, LED headlights with squared-out DRLs, a black band in place of a grille, and a wide air dam.

On the sides, the car is flanked by flush-fitted door handles and 20-inch aerodynamically-designed alloy wheels.

A set of pixelated LED taillights is available at the rear.

    Information

It is offered with two battery packs

The IONIQ 5 gets an electric motor and two battery pack options: 58kWh and 72.6kWh. The EV supports a 350kW DC fast charger that charges from 10-80% in 18 minutes. The setup promises a driving range of up to 481km on a single charge.

    Interiors

The hatchback features seven airbags and Level-2 ADAS functions

The Hyundai IONIQ 5 offers a spacious five-seater cabin with automatic climate control, a multifunctional steering wheel, 8-way power-adjustable front seats, a wireless phone charging pad, a head-up display, a sunroof, and eco-processed leather upholstery.

The EV packs a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12.3-inch HD touchscreen infotainment panel.

Passengers' safety is ensured by seven airbags, Level-2 ADAS functions, and a 360-degree-view camera.

    Hyundai IONIQ 5 EV: Pricing

In India, the pricing and availability details of the IONIQ 5 will be revealed by Hyundai at the time of its launch in early 2023. We expect the EV to be priced under Rs. 50 lakh (ex-showroom), since it will arrive via the CKD route.
