Tesla to enhance Cybertruck EV with Full Self-Driving feature
Tesla has announced an updated roadmap for its Full Self-Driving (FSD) advanced driver-assist system. The company plans to introduce this feature in the Cybertruck later this month, followed by a more comprehensive v13 update in October. Additionally, Tesla aims to launch FSD in Europe and China within the first quarter of next year, subject to regulatory approval.
Cybertruck to receive autopilot features
The Cybertruck, which has been in customers' hands for over nine months, initially lacked not only FSD but also Autopilot features like lane-keeping. This month, Tesla plans to equip the Cybertruck with these capabilities, starting with Autopark. This update will enable Cybertrucks to automatically maneuver into visible parking spots on streets and in lots.
Tesla eyes international expansion of FSD
Tesla's updated FSD roadmap also includes plans for expansion into international markets such as Europe and China. This move has already had a positive impact on Tesla's share price, according to Reuters. However, the company faces regulatory hurdles in the European Union where new car technologies require preapproval from safety regulators before they can be launched.
Tesla's FSD faces regulatory challenges in Europe
To gain approval for FSD in Europe, Tesla must prove to EU regulators that its system is at least as safe as human drivers. This requirement comes amidst reports linking FSD and Autopilot to hundreds of crashes and dozens of fatalities in the US. Despite these challenges, Tesla remains optimistic about receiving regulatory approval for its advanced driver-assist system.
Tesla begins FSD registration process in China
In China, Tesla has initiated the registration process for FSD with local regulators earlier this year to commence internal testing. The company has already offered a less capable version of FSD to its Chinese customers. This move comes as Chinese automakers are developing their own self-driving technologies, including vision-based systems, intensifying competition in the market.
Tesla's upcoming FSD updates and improvements
Tesla's upcoming "supervised" FSD v12 update aims to demonstrate the effectiveness of its camera-only approach. The company is also preparing for an October release of v13, which promises "six times improved miles between necessary interventions." Additionally, Tesla has launched its parking lot self-driving ASS (Actually Smart Summon) update this week and plans to release updates on eye tracking with sunglasses later this month.
