Tesla recalls 46,000 Cybertrucks as body panels could fly off
What's the story
Tesla has started recalling as many as 46,096 Cybertruck vehicles in the US.
The move comes to fix a possible safety concern with an exterior panel that may fall off while on the road.
This isn't the first time Tesla has recalled its electric pickup truck. In fact, since its debut in November 2023, the Elon Musk-led company has initiated six recalls for the futuristic EV.
Safety concern
Detached panel poses potential road hazard
The recall was initiated over a stainless-steel trim panel, called the cant rail, coming off the vehicle.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said this could be a road hazard and increase the risk of an accident.
Tesla admitted that if the cant rail stainless steel panel detaches from the vehicle while in drive, it could pose a road hazard for following motorists and increase their risk of injury or a collision.
Remedial action
Free replacement for affected rail assembly
Tesla has said that it will replace the affected rail assembly free of charge for the customers.
The company flagged 151 warranty claims that could be associated with this condition.
Although it hasn't revealed Cybertruck delivery numbers, analysts estimate that these recalled vehicles account for a large majority of pickups on US roads.
The company has also paused delivery of the car as after several owners complained about the vehicle's trim pieces coming unglued.
Market impact
Cybertruck's success crucial for Tesla amid rising competition
The success of the Cybertruck is considered key to Tesla's growth, particularly in the face of growing competition and an aging lineup.
However, the demand for this quirky EV pickup has shown signs of weakness toward the end of last year, thanks to several delays.
This latest recall only adds to the woes of the Cybertruck, which has been criticized over its design, build quality.
