Tesla EVs—priced at around ₹21L—could arrive in India this April
What's the story
Leading electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer Tesla is gearing up to make its Indian debut as early as April this year.
The company plans to introduce imported EVs from its Berlin facility, CNBC-TV18 reported.
The move comes as part of Tesla's expansion strategy and follows founder Elon Musk's earlier statements about the importance of establishing sales and service networks before local production begins.
Market entry
Tesla's initial sales operations and pricing strategy
Tesla is said to be planning to introduce more affordable EV models in India, starting at around $25,000 (approximately ₹21 lakh).
The company's first sales operations will be focused on Mumbai and Delhi.
According to CNBC-TV18, the possible locations for Tesla's Indian debut are BKC and AeroCity Mumbai.
This comes in line with earlier Reuters reports that the EV giant has found sites for two showrooms in these cities.
Hiring spree
Tesla initiates recruitment drive in India
Ahead of its Indian launch, Tesla has started hiring for several roles. The company recently posted 13 mid-level positions, including store and customer relationship managers.
The job postings on Tesla's website show that these roles are located in the 'Mumbai Suburban' area.
This hiring spree comes just days after Musk met Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his recent US visit.
Production prospects
Tesla's future manufacturing plans in India
Previously, Musk had said Tesla won't start manufacturing in India until it's allowed to sell and service its cars here first.
Back in August 2021, he hinted that if the company's initial sales of imported vehicles go well, it could look at setting up a production unit in the country.
However, he also raised concerns over India's steep import duties on cars (70%-100% for CBUs).
