Tesla recalls Model X over risk of roof components falling
Tesla has announced a recall of approximately 9,100 Model X SUVs in the US due to a potential roof trim issue. The problem could cause cosmetic pieces to detach from the vehicle and create road hazards for other drivers. This is the second recall related to this issue since 2020, as reported by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
NHTSA highlights potential crash risk
The NHTSA has stated that the front and center roof cosmetic trim pieces may not have been adhered with primer, potentially leading to their separation from the vehicle. This could pose a road hazard and increase crash risk. The recall specifically applies to Model X SUVs from the 2016 model year. Tesla has assured that modifications were made at the supplier's end in July 2016 to prevent this issue in future models.
Tesla's action plan and investigation findings
Tesla has committed to testing the adhesion of the roof trim and reattaching any necessary trim pieces at no cost to vehicle owners. The company has been investigating reports related to this issue since 2022, conducting aging tests that include heat and humidity exposure. It was found that the remedy used in the 2020 recall was insufficient for detecting cosmetic roof trim pieces that could detach due to a lack of primer.
Tesla acknowledges reports related to roof trim issue
Tesla has acknowledged approximately 170 reports and claims potentially linked to the roof trim issue. However, the company has not received any reports of accidents or injuries associated with this recall. This physical recall is a rarity for Tesla, a company that typically addresses issues through over-the-air software updates. In the first half of this year alone, Tesla recalled nearly 2.6 million vehicles due to safety concerns, according to data from recall management platform developer Bizzycar.
