How to get a VIP number plate for your vehicle
What's the story
Fancy registration numbers, aka VIP numbers or special number plates, are a popular means for vehicle owners in India to flaunt their identity.
These unique identifiers aren't just restricted to cars but can also be used on two-wheelers such as motorcycles and scooters.
However, the process of getting such a number is not as easy as it sounds - it involves an e-auction.
Let's have a look.
Step #1
Online registration and selection process
The first step to get a fancy number is online registration. This can be done on the official website of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH).
After signing up as a public user, one can choose their desired VIP number from a list offered by vehicle dealerships.
The necessary fees for registration have to be paid at this stage to book the number.
Information
Fees and registration charges vary by state
The fees and registration charges for a fancy number differ from state to state. The price of these unique identifiers also varies depending on the vehicle type. They are usually classified into Super Elite, Single Digit, and semi-fancy numbers among others.
Step #2
Bidding and allotment process
The next step in the process is bidding for the selected VIP number. This starts on the fourth day after registration and continues till the fifth day.
Once the results are declared, applicants can either pay any outstanding balance or collect a refund as per their bid status.
An allotment letter is then issued for reference, marking the end of this phase.
Step #3
Final registration and processing time
The last step in getting a VIP number is registering it at the concerned Regional Transport Office (RTO).
The applicants get a 90-day window to complete the task after receiving their allotment letter.
The complete process, from online registration to final allotment of the fancy number, usually takes about five days.
