SKODA SLAVIA 1.5 TSI automatic review: Should you buy it?
Recently, we drove the SKODA SLAVIA equipped with 1.0-liter TSI petrol engine and were impressed by its performance and overall driving experience. However, there is also a more powerful 1.5-liter TSI petrol variant with class leading power figures. It is only available with the top-end Style trim. We have tested the 1.5 TSI automatic variant to see if it is worth a buy.
Why does this story matter?
SKODA has a history with performance sedans in India. It was the first automaker to introduce this genre in our market with its original OCTAVIA RS. Similarly, the SLAVIA 1.5 TSI provides a more powerful engine option for those who yearn for extra performance. With changing tastes of the Indian car buyer, the performance-oriented sedan will certainly have takers in our market.
The car is longer than rivals and looks more premium
Visually, there is nothing to distinguish the 1.5 TSI from the 1.0 TSI variant. The overall design theme is elegant along with a classic sedan silhouette. With a length of 4,541mm, the SLAVIA is clearly longer than rivals and it surely looks more premium as well. We also like the design of the 16-inch alloy wheels while the C-shaped taillamps are quite distinctive.
The cabin gets a unique 2-spoke steering wheel
The interior design is a mix of various materials and finishes but we especially liked the copper accents on the dashboard. The two-spoke steering wheel is nice to hold while the center console is dominated by a large, free-standing touchscreen. There are also touch-based AC controls which are easy to get used to. The massive wheelbase allows for a spacious cabin.
From a rear-view camera to an electric sunroof
Available with the Style trim, the equipment list of the 1.5-liter TSI model is fairly long. The list includes a digital instrument cluster, a 10.0-inch touchscreen infotainment console, ventilated front seats, automatic climate control, wireless smartphone connectivity, and connected car technology. It also gets an electric sunroof, rear AC vents, a rear-view camera, wireless charging, six airbags and ESC, among other features.
The engine offers ample performance
The powertrain in question here is a 1.5-liter, 4-cylinder, turbocharged petrol unit which develops 150hp/250Nm. Hence, the SLAVIA 1.5 TSI is easily the most powerful car in its class. Standard is a 6-speed manual gearbox while optional is the 7-speed DSG automatic that we have driven here. The engine offers terrific performance and the automatic gearbox is also responsive with precise shift quality.
Massive ground clearance comes in handy on our roads
In terms of the overall dynamics, the SLAVIA feels sure footed and nimble around tight corners with only a smidgen of body roll. The massive 179mm ground clearance also makes it practical for our roads as it clears huge potholes with ease. The suspension is quiet and has been tuned very well for our road conditions. In terms of fuel efficiency, expect 12-14km/l.
Is it worth your money?
The SKODA SLAVIA 1.5 TSI manual is priced at Rs. 16.19 lakh, while the automatic variant costs Rs. 17.79 lakh (both prices, ex-showroom). That means, the automatic 1.5 TSI is a whopping Rs. 2.4 lakh more expensive than the 1.0 TSI automatic. However, the 1.5 TSI somewhat justifies the pricing with its better performance. Overall, the SLAVIA 1.5 TSI is a brilliant driver's car.
