Prior to launch in 2025, SKODA compact SUV found testing
SKODA has officially declared the launch of a new compact SUV in India. The vehicle, spotted in production-ready test mule form, indicates readiness to hit the roads. Despite low profit margins, the compact SUV segment's high sales volume makes it an attractive market for car manufacturers. With this latest addition from SKODA, the segment will now feature 10 different cars from nine distinct carmakers.
A look at the exteriors
The forthcoming SUV will be built on SKODA's acclaimed MQB-A0-IN platform. It also underpins other cars like the Kushaq and Slavia. To compete in the sub-4m segment, this model will have a shorter wheelbase, lowered by approximately 230mm. Spy shots reveal that SKODA has trimmed the overhangs at the front and back. The design will adhere to the firm's familiar design language, resembling the Kushaq but with a split headlight setup and a slatted grille.
Expected feature list and performance
SKODA is speculated to equip the upcoming four-wheeler with more features than currently offered in the Kushaq and Slavia. These potential additions could include a 360-degree-view camera, and Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). Under the hood, Skoda has confirmed that the vehicle will be powered by a 1.0-liter, three-cylinder turbo-petrol engine, delivering 115hp of power and 178Nm of torque. This mill is known for its strong performance and good fuel economy.
How much will it cost?
SKODA plans to price the car competitively, considering that the compact SUV market ranges from ₹8-18 lakh. The company intends to make this a global model, built in India, and retailed in international markets like South America, Africa, and South-East Asia. The expected price range is between ₹9-14 lakh (ex-showroom). This strategic pricing coupled with high safety ratings and feature set, will make it a strong contender in the category.
SKODA is having a contest to choose a name
SKODA is currently running a contest on its social media platforms to choose a moniker for its upcoming SUV. The name should begin with a 'K' and end with a 'Q,' in line with its global SUV naming strategy. Ten names have been shortlisted for final consideration: Kylaq, Kymaq, Kwiq, Kaiq, Kayaq, Kliq, Kariq, Kyroq, Kosmiq, and Karmiq. The official launch of the compact SUV is scheduled for March 2025.
