Renault to enter India's EV market with Kiger EV
What's the story
As part of its strategy to regain lost market share, Renault will introduce a new range of SUVs and compact electric vehicles (EVs) in India.
The French automaker's annual sales volumes have plummeted, with its market share falling below 1% in the country.
The first model from this new lineup will be the Kiger EV, internally codenamed Project RJ2K5.
Production will commence in the second half of 2026, hinting at a possible market launch in FY2027.
Affordable EV
Renault Kiger EV: A vehicle for the masses
The Renault Kiger EV is being developed on a dedicated EV platform, specifically targeting mass-market consumers.
The company wants to price this model under ₹15 lakh, making it an affordable option for many buyers.
After the Kiger EV, an electric version of the Triber is also expected to hit the market. It will not just cater to families but also fleet buyers, expanding its customer base.
Local sourcing
Strategy for affordable EVs
In order to keep its electric vehicles competitively priced, Renault India is also looking at the option of locally sourcing batteries. The company has been in discussions with Tata AutoComp for the same.
Future launches
Upcoming launches and investment plans
Along with its EV lineup, Renault is also planning major facelifts for its compact cars, Kiger and Triber.
The revamped models will debut before the all-new mid-size SUVs Duster and Bigster enter the market in 2026.
The launch plan is in line with Renault's previously announced strategy with Nissan, which includes a ₹5,400 crore investment for upcoming models.
Market challenges
CEO acknowledges challenges in Indian market
Renault Group CEO Luca de Meo has acknowledged the firm's struggles in India, calling it a challenging market.
However, he reiterated that Renault is "not shying away from the market and is ready to bet on India for the future," with its alliance partner Nissan.
Despite a challenging period with average monthly sales below 4,000 units and market share below 1%, De Meo is optimistic about Renault's future in India.
Strategy shift
Renault's future plans and leadership changes
Renault's future strategy for India involves new EVs, facelifts, and the reintroduction of legacy models.
However, some insiders claim that this approach appears more reactive than proactive.
Along with these product strategies, a leadership change is also underway in the sales and marketing department with Dacia Spain's CEO set to take over from Sudhir Malhotra.
