Mercedes-Benz unveils its first all-electric G-Wagen
Mercedes has electrified its iconic G-Wagen, a vehicle renowned for its luxury and off-road capabilities. The EV, marketed as G580 with EQ Technology, retains the distinctive square shape and robust proportions that have made the G-Wagen a classic. The new electric model is powered by a 116kWh battery and an all-electric drivetrain. It features four individually controlled motors that produce a maximum total output of 432kW, equivalent to about 580hp. The vehicle also boasts a maximum torque of 1,164Nm.
The electric G-Wagen's design
The G580 defies traditional EV design norms, blending new technology with the G-Wagen's unique identity as it celebrates its 45th birthday. Minor modifications include a slightly raised hood, slots in the rear wheel arches for improved airflow, silver "EQ" badges, illuminated grille, and a spoiler on the rear edge of the roof. The undercarriage continues to feature a reliable ladder frame with independent front suspension and a newly developed rigid rear axle for a lower center of gravity.
The battery is stored in the floor of the vehicle
The battery of the electric G-Wagen is expected to propel the vehicle to an estimated range of 473km on the WLTP standard. It is stored in the floor of the vehicle and protected by an underbody skid plate made from a mix of materials including carbon. This increases rigidity compared to alternatives made from steel or aluminium, provides long-lasting corrosion protection, and saves weight.
Mercedes adds fake engine noise to electric G-Wagen
Mercedes has added a fake engine noise, branded as G-Roar, to its electric G-Wagen. Inspired by the ICE lineup's "emotional V8 sounds," the G-Roar uses external speakers to simulate sounds that can change when switching between drive modes. Despite its off-roading focus, the electric G-Wagen can accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in 4.7 seconds with an electronically limited maximum speed of 180km/h. It can be charged at up to 200kW using a Level 3 DC fast-charger.
The electric G-Wagen offers touchscreens for rear passengers
The interior of the electric G-Wagen is filled with luxury features such as open-pore walnut trim, a nappa-leather-covered steering wheel, ambient lighting, and leather upholstery. There's a 12.3-inch digital display running on Mercedes's MBUX infotainment system. Rear-seat passengers can enjoy personal 11.6-inch touchscreens mounted on the back of the front seats Additional features include temperature-controlled cupholders, wireless charging, dashcam, and a Burmester 3D surround-sound system. The base model G580 with EQ technology is projected to start around $180,000.
