Mercedes-Benz to replace C 300D with C 300 petrol model
Mercedes-Benz is planning a significant change to its C-Class sedan range in India, by introducing the all-new C 300 petrol model. This move, scheduled for the second quarter of 2024, will replace the current top-tier C 300d. The decision comes as a response to a noticeable shift in consumer preference from diesel to petrol, particularly within the luxury sedan market.
CEO highlights shift in consumer preference for petrol
Santosh Iyer, the CEO and Managing Director of Mercedes-Benz India, has shed light on the changing consumer trend. He noted that diesel demand is dwindling, particularly in urban areas like Delhi-NCR. According to Iyer, this shift appears to be driven more by fear than a rational reason. However, he confirmed an undeniable increase in preference for petrol among customers.
Petrol dominates sedan segment, diesel favored for SUVs
Iyer further highlighted that the shift toward petrol is more pronounced in the sedan category, where "almost 70% are petrols." Conversely, "for SUVs, it's diesels that make up the majority 60%." The fifth-generation C-Class was initially launched with three variants - two diesel versions (C 220d and C 300d), and one petrol model (C 200). With this upcoming change, the C-Class range will now feature two petrol models and one diesel trim.
C 300 petrol model to feature advanced specifications
The upcoming Mercedes-Benz C 300 will be powered by a 2.0-liter, four-cylinder, turbo-petrol mill with mild-hybrid technology. It will be paired with a 9-speed automatic gearbox. The power output of this new model stands at 258hp (23hp more from the mild-hybrid system) and it produces a torque of 400Nm. Mercedes-Benz claims that the new model can accelerate from 0-100km/h in just six seconds.
Enhanced ground clearance and comfort
The C 300 petrol variant will feature a raised suspension to improve ground clearance, addressing a known issue with the C-Class series. This increased ground clearance is expected to be paired with a softer suspension for enhanced ride comfort. The new car is likely to be available in a single, fully-loaded AMG Line trim, mirroring the outgoing C 300d.
