Mercedes-Benz to unveil electric G-Class SUV on April 24
German automaker Mercedes-Benz is set to reveal the electric version of its G-Class, the "G580 with EQ Technology," at Auto China in Beijing this month. The off-roader will retain the EQ branding, contrary to previous speculations. This will distinguish it from the concept model known as EQG, marking a significant milestone in the company's journey toward electrification.
G580: A power upgrade from its predecessor
The "G580" moniker suggests a power upgrade from the previous model, the G550. The standard G-Class for 2025 has transitioned from a V8 to a mild-hybrid, inline-six mill that generates 443hp of power and 560Nm of torque. However, it remains uncertain if the electric G will surpass the performance of AMG G63, which retains its V8 engine with 577hp and 850Nm.
Anticipated features of the electric G-Class
The G-Class EV is tipped to feature four motors (one at each rim), and an estimated battery capacity of 100kWh. This setup should provide a range exceeding 322km, which is anticipated given its heavy SUV status. The vehicle will also offer 32-degree approach and 35-degree departure angles, along with 9.8-inch ground clearance, ensuring its off-road capabilities.
Future plans and event schedule
Mercedes-Benz plans to showcase an updated EQS at Auto China in 2024, along with several new models. The Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S E Performance with a plug-in hybrid V8 setup, will make its debut at the AMG Brand Night Event in Shanghai on April 20. The electric G-Class is set to premiere on April 24, a day before Auto China begins, marking another significant event in the automotive calendar.
Mercedes-Benz EQG to make Indian debut
Mercedes-Benz EQG, another EV version of the G-Class, will also make its global debut on April 24. The model is confirmed to be released in India following its global debut. This will take place sometime in early 2025.
