Why Mercedes-Benz has recalled E-Class, C-Class cars in India
What's the story
Mercedes-Benz has issued a recall for its E-Class and C-Class models in India over a software glitch in the engine control unit (ECU).
The recall also covers other models such as the GLC and G-Class SUVs, S-Class, AMG GT as well as AMG E 63.
The vehicles are being recalled over potential issues with their fuel delivery module that "might not meet specifications."
Technical issue
ECU software glitch could deactivate fuel injection
The ECU software glitch in the affected models could potentially deactivate the fuel injection in the petrol engine while exiting 'sailing mode.'
This is a feature aimed at improving fuel efficiency by letting the car coast more naturally when one removes their foot from the accelerator pedal.
However, if this happens, it may cause the car to lose "its propulsion without any prior warning," increasing collision risk.
Recall impact
Recall affects over 2,500 E-Class and C-Class units
The software problem has been detected in 2,543 E-Class models produced between April 29, 2022 and August 20, 2024.
Three C-Classes manufactured between August 31, 2021 and October 31, 2021 are also affected by this recall.
The company is taking steps to rectify these issues in a timely manner to ensure customer safety and vehicle performance.
Additional recall
Fuel delivery module issue affects other Mercedes-Benz models
The recall also covers the GLC and G-Class SUVs along with the S-Class, AMG GT, and AMG E 63 models over potential issues with their fuel delivery module.
The faulty fuel delivery module could cause the fuel pump to switch off in these vehicles.
This issue is limited to petrol variants of these models and could make them "spontaneously lose propulsion," increasing accident risk.
