Mercedes-AMG W14 unveiled as title contender for 2023 F1 season
Ahead of the 2023 Formula 1 season, German automaker Mercedes-AMG has revealed its title contender, the W14 race car. The vehicle has returned to its iconic black livery, which was last seen in the 2021 season. The race car retains most of the design elements from the W13 model from the last season and is backed by a 1.6-liter, turbocharged, V6 power unit.
Why does this story matter?
Since the beginning of the hybrid era in 2014, the Mercedes-AMG Petronas team has been a force to reckon with. The team has won a record-breaking eight consecutive constructor championships, with Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg winning seven driver's titles in total. The team is now planning to wrap up the season once more with its title contender, the W14 race car.
The race car flaunts an all-new black livery
The 2023 Mercedes-AMG W14 race car retains the overall design from the outgoing model and flaunts an all-new black livery that looks aggressive as well as reduces the overall weight of the vehicle. It features the unique and minimalist sidepod design from the W13 model and gets redesigned front wing and floor aero elements. The race car rides on 18-inch wheels with covers.
It is backed by a 1.6-liter hybrid V6 power unit
As regulated by Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA), the Mercedes-AMG W14 race car draws power from a 1.6-liter, turbocharged, V6 engine linked to a hybrid setup comprising of an electric motor and Lithium-ion battery pack. The race car develops a maximum power of around 1,070hp.
It features a bespoke carbon fiber seat and the "Halo"
The interiors of the Formula 1 race car are generally designed as per the driver's requirements. The Mercedes-AMG W14 features a carbon fiber cockpit with a bespoke seat, designed to snugly fit the driver and a yoke-style steering wheel with an integrated display and a host of buttons and dials. Driver safety is ensured by a multi-point racing harness and a "Halo" protection system.
Lewis Hamilton and George Russell will drive for Mercedes-AMG
In the 2023 season, Lewis Hamilton and George Russell will drive the W14 race car for the Mercedes-AMG Petronas team, with Mick Schumacher serving as the reserve driver. The team will be led by Toto Wolff as Team Principal and CEO.
