Is Lotus' Evija the most powerful electric car? Hell, yeah
What's the story
British automaker Lotus has unveiled its first-ever all-electric supercar, the Evija (pronounced E-vi-ya).
It is the company's first offering in 11 years.
Despite the long hiatus, Lotus knows the true hypercar fashion in and out. It will make only 130 units of this $1.86 million (Rs. 13 crore) worth, 1,972bhp road beast.
Notably, Lotus was bought by Chinese automotive group Geely.
Here's our roundup.
Exteriors
Lotus Evija: At a glance
The Lotus Evija, weighing at 1,680 kilograms, is one of the lightest production EV hypercars.
It has a one-piece carbon-fiber monocoque chassis with cut-out sides and massive front splitter for better aerodynamics. The scissor-cut doors don't have handles and can be opened using the key fob.
Further, there are laser headlights and taillights, and the side mirrors have been replaced with cameras.
Interiors
Inside the cabin
Interestingly, the cabin is inspired by the 1950s race cars, with a 'floating wing' dashboard, and a driver-focused multi-functional steering wheel that we've seen on F1 cars.
The seats and the steering wheel are lined with Alcantara while a leather finish is available as optional.
The digital display broadcasts all vitals of the car and the floating center console offers touch-sensitive haptic feedback buttons.
Engine and power
Under the hood
With one motor dedicated to each wheel, the Lotus Evija offers 1,972bhp of maximum power. The all-electric coupe will have a top speed of over 320kmph and can accelerate from 0-100kmph in under 3 seconds.
The hypercar will offer a range of around 354km on a single charge and the 2,000kW battery can fully juice up in 18 minutes via a 350kW charger.
Pricing and availability
Lotus Evija will go into production next year
Lotus will start producing the Evija next year in the UK and only 130 units will be made.
The hypercar will be available at a starting price of $2.1 million. If you want to own one of these, you can secure a production allocation by making a deposit of $310,500 or roughly Rs. 2.13 crore.
