Kawasaki finally discontinues its Ninja 400 model in India
Kawasaki has officially discontinued the Ninja 400 in India, paving the way for the introduction of the Ninja 500. The Ninja 400 was first launched in India in 2018 with a price tag of ₹4.69 lakh (ex-showroom), but was temporarily withdrawn from sale due to BS6 emissions norms that came into effect in 2020. It made a brief comeback this year before being removed from Kawasaki's India website.
Ninja 400's final farewell and Ninja 500's arrival
The Ninja 400, last priced at ₹5.24 lakh (ex-showroom), was sold as a Completely Built Unit (CBU). In preparation for its discontinuation, Kawasaki gave significant discounts on the model to clear old inventory, and make way for the Ninja 500. The new Ninja 500 was introduced in February 2024 with a price tag matching that of the phased-out model.
Ninja 500: A new chapter in Kawasaki's Indian journey
The phased-out Ninja 400 boasted a 399cc parallel-twin, liquid-cooled engine that produced 44hp at 10,000rpm, with peak torque of 37Nm at 8,000rpm. In contrast, the all-new Kawasaki Ninja 500 is equipped with a larger 451cc liquid-cooled, parallel-twin mill that delivers a power output of 45hp at 9,000rpm and torque of 42.6Nm. Despite being an entirely new model that shared minimal features with the localized Ninja 300, it carries the same price tag as its predecessor.
A look at the rivals
In India, the Kawasaki Ninja 500 is competitively priced in its segment. It takes on rivals such as the Aprilia RS 457, the Yamaha R3, and the KTM RC 390.
